Philadora Pizzeria

From Madison Pizza Wiki

Philadora Pizzeria (also Phil-A-Dora) was a carry-out and delivery pizzeria owned by Phillip T. Clementi, first on South Park Street and then on Regent Street. It is the first Madison business found in the papers with "pizzeria" in its name. Clementi later ran Papa Phil's, one of the early customers of the pizza-supply dealer Joe Brusca[1].

History

In April 1960 it advertised: "PHILADORA PIZZERIA — PIZZA SPAGHETTI — CARRY OUTS — OUR SPECIALTY — OPEN NIGHTLY 5 P.M. TO 2 A.M. — 945 S. PARK ST."[2] In April 1961 Clementi applied for a beer license for the pizzeria; the Council had turned down the request the year before[3][4][5]. That June the Council granted beer tavern licenses to two pizzerias[6].

In December 1961 it announced: "PHIL-A-DORA PIZZERIA HAS MOVED TO 933 Regent St. ... We Specialize in Carryout and Deliveries"[7]. It was still open in June 1963[8].
