The six stores closed on July 23–24, 1996, after Little Caesar's told its distributor in mid-July to stop deliveries. The family said it had told the company in August 1995 that it wanted to sell, found a buyer in April 1996 and had verbal approval in early July; the company said the stores closed without its permission.
At least 60 employees (70–90 by another count) lost their jobs, with paychecks unpaid; the state Labor Standards Bureau investigated under the plant-closing law.
Sued Little Caesar Enterprises Inc. in Dane County Circuit Court on September 11, 1996, for terminating the franchises without 90 days' notice, claiming lost profits and the lost sale; said to owe Little Caesar's over $100,000. Little Caesar's sued in federal court in Michigan to stop the family using its name.
The Dane County suit was dismissed on January 13, 1997, because the corporation no longer existed and Michigan law governed the contract.
