1980s (decade)
The 1980s pizza scene in Madison saw large growth in Rocky's and Pizza Pit locations. Domino's, which had become a major nationwide chain, still hadn't really entered Madison's market. (The newspapers show otherwise: Domino's opened its first Madison store in 1983 and had seven by 1986, though it was only third in the market[1]. Little Caesar's arrived in 1982[2].)
By the middle of the decade the trade was big business. In 1985 the Capital Times put area pizza sales at about $30 million a year, nearly $100 for every Dane County resident, and noted that "most industry observers agree that Madison eats more pizza per capita than just about any city in the nation." Pizza Pit alone sold more than 800,000 pizzas from ten outlets in 1984[3].
Reviews and guides
Before Samara Kalk Derby began writing about Madison restaurants in the 1990s, the reviews came from the State Journal's Sunday "Diner's Scorecard" (Genie Campbell, Sunny Schubert, Sandra Kallio, Chris Martell and others) and the Capital Times' Saturday "Cheap Eats" (Jay Rath, Brooks Egerton, Patsy McGuire, Muriel LaRose) and "Dining Out" (Holly Gruber, Jacob Stockinger, Kaye Schultz, Karen Prager, Margaret Collins) columns. Each October the State Journal also published a "Madison Area Dining Guide", whose listings give a yearly count of the chains' stores.
