In the 1970s Pizza Pit spread across Madison, and Rocky Rococo opened downtown and grew to five restaurants. Pizza was delivered by truck — two companies baked it in the trucks on the way — and the student newspaper held an annual contest to judge the campus delivery pizzas (see Daily Cardinal pizza contests and Pizza trucks).
1970
- January–February: Shakey's runs its East (3553 E. Washington Ave.) and West (6640 University Ave., Middleton) parlors, with sing-alongs and, at the West parlor, family film nights[1][2].
- May: new beer-license applications from Barnaby's for 4802 E. Washington Ave. and 6613 Mineral Point Rd., from Biagio Gargano for 437 State St., and from Pizza Hut of Madison[3].
- June: KC Rolling Pizza, which bakes its pizzas in its delivery trucks, sponsors a softball team[4].

1971
- January: Barnaby's Family Inn holds its grand opening at 6613 Mineral Point Rd., near West Towne[7].
- April: Pizza Pit advertises free delivery from "all four Pizza Pits in Madison": Campus, Near East, Far East and So. Central[8]. A 16-inch sausage pizza costs $3.30[9].
- October: the Daily Cardinal's restaurant column, the "State Street Gourmet", tries pizzas baked in the backs of trucks by Eveready and KC's[10].
- November 3: the first Daily Cardinal pizza contest; Gargano's wins[11].

1973
- Wayne Mosley and Roger Brown visit each Big Ten university town, looking for a place to sell pan pizza, and choose Madison[14].

1974
