In the 1970s Pizza Pit spread across Madison, and Rocky Rococo opened downtown and grew to five restaurants. Pizza was delivered by truck — two companies baked it in the trucks on the way — and the student newspaper held an annual contest to judge the campus delivery pizzas (see Daily Cardinal pizza contests and Pizza trucks).
1970
- January–February: Shakey's runs its East (3553 E. Washington Ave.) and West (6640 University Ave., Middleton) parlors, with sing-alongs and, at the West parlor, family film nights[1][2].
- April: a wedding notice names a co-owner of Doug's Pizza, in Midvale Plaza[3].
- May: new beer-license applications from Barnaby's for 4802 E. Washington Ave. and 6613 Mineral Point Rd., from Biagio Gargano for 437 State St., and from Pizza Hut of Madison[4].
- June: KC Rolling Pizza, which bakes its pizzas in its delivery trucks, sponsors a softball team[5].
- August: Mr. E's Pizza at Hilldale wants a truck driver[6].
- October: "the new West side Pizza Oven" opens at 2616 Monroe St.[7].
1971
- A new building goes up at Park and Regent, with Pino’s in the basement and the Bunky's music club upstairs[8].
- January: Barnaby's Family Inn holds its grand opening at 6613 Mineral Point Rd., near West Towne[9].
- April: Pizza Pit advertises free delivery from "all four Pizza Pits in Madison": Campus, Near East, Far East and So. Central[10]. A 16-inch sausage pizza costs $3.30[11].
- October: the Daily Cardinal's restaurant column, the "State Street Gourmet", tries pizzas baked in the backs of trucks by Eveready and KC's[12].
- November 3: the first Daily Cardinal pizza contest; Gargano's wins[13].
1972
- August: the Cardinal's telephone guide lists six "pizza places": Eveready, Gargano's, Gino's, K.C.'s, Pizza Oven and Pizza Pit[14].
- October: Doug's Pizza is one of the "present merchants" of the Midvale Plaza shopping center, with the IGA Foodliner, Bergmans Pharmacy and Baskin-Robbins[15].
- November 15: Gargano's wins the second Cardinal contest[16].
1973
- Wayne Mosley and Roger Brown visit each Big Ten university town, looking for a place to sell pan pizza, and choose Madison[17].
- Pizza in the Pan: Biagio Gargano opens an upstairs dining room at Gargano's for Sicilian-style pan pizza, later advertised as the first in Madison[18][19].
- April: West Side Pizza hires at 2616 Monroe St.[20]
- May: the city's license renewals include Family Pizza Parlor of Madison, doing business as Mike’s Fine Food, at 4243 W. Beltline Hwy.[21]
- May: Pizza on Wheels, delivery from the Soupçon restaurant at 112 King St., holds its grand opening[22].
- September: Luigi's, 462 State St., sells pizza by the slice, cheese 30¢[23]. Pizza Hut has three restaurants: 2405 S. Park St., 4709 Verona Rd. and 811 Fern Dr.[24]
- December: Gino's wins the third Cardinal contest[25].
1974
- March 16: Brown's Restaurant, 411 W. Gilman St., closes after 36 years[26].
- April 4: the first Rocky Rococo opens in its place[17]. By late April a large slice with sausage costs 80¢ at lunch[27].
- October: "newcomer Rocky Rococo" wins the fourth Cardinal contest[28].
1975
- April 25: the workers at Luigi's on State Street win recognition of their union — "the only union pizza in town"[29].
- May: the city license list includes Gargano's, Gino's, Paisan's, Luigi's, the Family Pizza Parlor (Mike’s Fine Food) on the West Beltline, two Barnaby's, two Pizza Huts, Rocky Rococo and Shakey's[30].
- June: Pino’s runs a Thursday special of a 14-inch Pizza del Pino with a carafe of wine for $4.95[31].
- Summer: the second Rocky Rococo opens at 651 State St.[17]
- July: Gargano's adds sfinciuni, "the Peter Pan Pizza", at 70¢ a slice[18].
- August: Rocky Rococo advertises two locations, 411 W. Gilman (whole pies, delivery) and 651 State (slices)[32].
- November: Rocky Rococo (pan) and Pizza Pit (thin crust) win the Cardinal contest[33].
1976
- April 10–11: Pizza Hut holds the grand opening of its East Washington Avenue restaurant, 3059 E. Washington Ave.[34]
1977
- February–September: Villa Piazza opens at 2039 Allen Blvd., Middleton, and hires "pizza makers & delivery persons"[35][36].
1978
- May–October: a west-side carryout using the pizza shop's later number, 238-5588, is advertised for sale, first because the owner is retiring and then "due to poor health"[37][38]. See Midvale Plaza Pizza.
- August: Rocky Rococo has five restaurants[39].
- November: The Pizza Oven is found for the first time at 1018 N. Sherman Ave.[40]
1979
- Early in the year: debts from the Bunky's music club close it and Pino’s; the Capadonas sell the corner[8]. By June it is Nona's, "formerly Pino's," still selling the Pizza del Pino[41].
- Winter 1978–79: Gino's introduces its trademarked "Stuffed Pizza®"[42][43].
- Jim Meyer, later of Pizza Extreme, starts work at Pizza Pit[44].
- August–September: "Midvale Plaza Pizza (by IGA)", 523 S. Midvale Blvd., advertises a Friday beer-batter fish dinner for $1.95[45].
