In the 1970s Pizza Pit spread across Madison, and Rocky Rococo opened downtown and grew to five restaurants. Pizza was delivered by truck — two companies baked it in the trucks on the way — and the student newspaper held an annual contest to judge the campus delivery pizzas (see Daily Cardinal pizza contests and Pizza trucks).
1970
- January–February: Shakey's runs its East (3553 E. Washington Ave.) and West (6640 University Ave., Middleton) parlors, with sing-alongs and, at the West parlor, family film nights[1][2].
- May: new beer-license applications from Barnaby's for 4802 E. Washington Ave. and 6613 Mineral Point Rd., from Biagio Gargano for 437 State St., and from Pizza Hut of Madison[3].
- June: KC Rolling Pizza, which bakes its pizzas in its delivery trucks, sponsors a softball team[4].
- August: Mr. E's Pizza at Hilldale wants a truck driver[5].
- October: "the new West side Pizza Oven" opens at 2616 Monroe St.[6].
1971
- January: Barnaby's Family Inn holds its grand opening at 6613 Mineral Point Rd., near West Towne[7].
- April: Pizza Pit advertises free delivery from "all four Pizza Pits in Madison": Campus, Near East, Far East and So. Central[8]. A 16-inch sausage pizza costs $3.30[9].
- October: the Daily Cardinal's restaurant column, the "State Street Gourmet", tries pizzas baked in the backs of trucks by Eveready and KC's[10].
- November 3: the first Daily Cardinal pizza contest; Gargano's wins[11].
1972
- August: the Cardinal's telephone guide lists six "pizza places": Eveready, Gargano's, Gino's, K.C.'s, Pizza Oven and Pizza Pit[12].
- November 15: Gargano's wins the second Cardinal contest[13].
1973
- Wayne Mosley and Roger Brown visit each Big Ten university town, looking for a place to sell pan pizza, and choose Madison[14].
- Pizza in the Pan: Biagio Gargano opens an upstairs dining room at Gargano's for Sicilian-style pan pizza, later advertised as the first in Madison[15][16].
- April: West Side Pizza hires at 2616 Monroe St.[17]
- May: Pizza on Wheels, delivery from the Soupçon restaurant at 112 King St., holds its grand opening[18].
- September: Luigi's, 462 State St., sells pizza by the slice, cheese 30¢[19]. Pizza Hut has three restaurants: 2405 S. Park St., 4709 Verona Rd. and 811 Fern Dr.[20]
- December: Gino's wins the third Cardinal contest[21].
1974
- March 16: Brown's Restaurant, 411 W. Gilman St., closes after 36 years[22].
- April 4: the first Rocky Rococo opens in its place[14]. By late April a large slice with sausage costs 80¢ at lunch[23].
- October: "newcomer Rocky Rococo" wins the fourth Cardinal contest[24].
1975
- April 25: the workers at Luigi's on State Street win recognition of their union — "the only union pizza in town"[25].
- May: the city license list includes Gargano's, Gino's, Paisan's, Luigi's, the Family Pizza Parlor on the West Beltline, two Barnaby's, two Pizza Huts, Rocky Rococo and Shakey's[26].
- Summer: the second Rocky Rococo opens at 651 State St.[14]
- July: Gargano's adds sfinciuni, "the Peter Pan Pizza", at 70¢ a slice[15].
