Pino’s

(Redirected from Pino's)

Pino’s was the Capadona family's Italian restaurant and bar at the corner of Park and Regent streets, 3 N. Park St., in Madison's old Greenbush neighborhood. It followed the family's Bunky’s on the same corner[1] and was known for its Pizza del Pino[2].

History

The restaurant was called Pino's by September 1963[3]. In 1964 it advertised as "Pino's Restaurant and Bar, Corner Park and Regent"[4].

In 1971 a new building went up on the corner, with Pino's in the basement and the Bunky's music club upstairs. In her 1980 review of the restaurant that followed, Sunny Schubert wrote that the club "proved to be the downfall of the venerable restaurant." Its debts forced both to close early in 1979, and the Capadonas sold out[5]. The corner then became Nona's, "formerly Pino's," and in 1980 Madonna's[6][5].

By 1982 the Pino's name was back on the corner, with lunches, dinners, carryouts and Pizza del Pino on Thursdays[7]. Who ran it then, and when it closed, have not been found.

Pizza

  • Before 1971: an undated menu lists cheese, sausage, anchovy, pepperoni, pepper, mushroom, shrimp and deluxe pizzas in small, medium and large, from 80 cents for a small cheese to $3.55 for a large deluxe; "We will make any combination of above to order." A "Pino's Giant Party Pizza," 16 by 24 inches, "5.50 and up," is crossed out. The Wednesday special was a small sausage pizza for 75 cents, and "All our food is put up to go"[8]. A former employee commented that the menu dates from before the new building of about 1971[8].
  • 1975: a "Thursday Nite Special" of a 14-inch Pizza del Pino with a carafe of the house wine for $4.95[2].
  • 1979: as Nona's, the 14-inch Pizza del Pino was the Wednesday special at $5.10[6].
  • 1980: Madonna's still listed "Pizza LaPino" on its menu[5].
  • 1982: $1 off a large pizza, and Pizza del Pino on Thursdays[7].

Locations
