Joe’s Pizza Pie

From Madison Pizza Wiki

Joe's Pizza Pie was Joe Aiello's restaurant and tavern at 907 Regent St., in the Greenbush neighborhood. It is the earliest business found in the Madison papers that advertised pizza. A 2008 State Journal history called it the rumored first pizza place in Madison and dated it to 1943[1]; the papers first show it in February 1945.

History

In 1942 the building was a grocery, the Joe Reda Meat Market and Grocery[2]. Its store fixtures, among them a grocery display counter, were advertised for sale in January 1945[3]. Two weeks later Joe's Pizza Pie began advertising every week in both papers: "JOE'S PIZZA PIE — RESTAURANT and TAVERN — 907 Regent St. — We Specialize In ... PIZZA — SEA FOODS — VEAL SCALOPINI — We Also Serve ... RAVIOLI ... SPAGHETTI ... STEAKS ... CHICKEN — Though we may not have the newest in equipment—until after Victory — we do serve the FINEST IN FOODS! JOE AIELLO—proprietor"[4][5].

By September 1945 it called itself "Joe's Pizza Pie Spaghetti House", with chicken dinners, French-fried shrimp, veal scaloppine and spaghetti with meatballs[6]. In December the ads read "REOPENED — To again serve the finest in Italian-American Foods"[7]. No ads for it have been found after 1945.
