Carlo’s

From Madison Pizza Wiki

Carlo's was Carlo Caputo's carry-out and pizza place on State Street. Caputo, a Sicilian-born grocer on the 600 block of State Street, brought his nephews, the Gargano brothers, to Madison; a 2008 history says he opened Carlo's, "a pizza joint on the Capitol Square", in 1955[1].

History

In November 1958 "Carlo's Carry-Out Food Service", 435 State St., advertised barbecued chicken and "We Deliver"[2]. In the Daily Cardinal in late 1960 it ran "CARLO'S PIZZA — Delivered To Your Room", open till 1 a.m.[3][4]

In April 1964 a classified offered a "PIZZA RESTAURANT—435 State St." for sale: "See Mr. Caputo"[5]. That month a windstorm peeled the metal siding off "Carlo's Pizza Parlor, 435 State St."[6] In September 1964 Gargano’s Pizzeria, run by Caputo's nephew Biagio Gargano, opened at the same address[7][8].

In November 1965 Carlo's was back, at 320 State St.: "NEW OPENING — Carlo's Back! — Pizza, BBQ Chicken, BBQ Ribs, Spaghetti"[9]. Carlo Caputo applied for a beer and liquor license for 320 State St. that week[10].
