Green Dragon Inn
The Green Dragon Inn was a restaurant and coffee house at 217 S. Hamilton St., in the Hamilton Place office building at Hamilton and West Wilson streets, whose house specialty was a double-crust stuffed pizza. It came to Madison from Fort Atkinson in the autumn of 1983 and closed by mid-1987.
History
Joe Moore's Green Dragon in Fort Atkinson was a coffee house "that claimed to serve the state's best pizza". In the autumn of 1983 Moore moved it to Madison, into the former Library Lounge on South Hamilton Street. Chef Louis Szathmary of The Bakery in Chicago designed a gourmet menu around the pizza; a small one cost $8[1].
The State Journal's fall dining guides listed it in 1984, 1985 and 1986. The 1984 guide called it "Fine dining in the atmosphere of an English inn" with "gourmet double crust stuffed pizza", open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week[2]; the 1985 and 1986 guides, "Continental cuisine in atmosphere of an Old English Inn. Double crust stuffed pizza is house specialty"[3][4].
By June 1987 the space had become the Wilson Street Grill. A Capital Times review said the redone restaurant "bears no resemblance to the former Library Lounge, briefly reincarnated as the Green Dragon and Willy's"[5].
