New York pizza by the slice with 'dozens of slices to choose from'; opened Oct. 1997 by the Great Dane's owners; after Samara Kalk's June 1999 remark that the slices had slipped, Sal's ran an Onion ad buying lunch for readers who wrote in its defense (142 did); listed for sale in Pizza Today in Aug. 1999 and taken over by Nafi Elmazi, who reopened it as Casa Bianca in Sept. 1999.
License applied for in Sept. 1997 (agent Gene Gowan, the third partner), granted Sept. 16; pre-opening ads offered 'the ground floor of this exciting concept'; opened Monday Oct. 27, 1997 next to Zorba's under a neon 'A slice of New York on State Street'. Samara Kalk gave it three stars; Dave Becker called it 'a new contender for Madison's best pizza'.
Prices in late 1997: slices $1.75 (cheese) to $2.50 (Chicken Parmigiana, Lasagna); whole pies $12–15 (Philly cheese-steak, lasagna, 'salad', pesto-roasted red pepper, ziti, hot chicken, grilled cheese among 20 specialties); eggplant parmigiana $6.95; calzone extras 75 cents; Great Dane beers on tap. Hours by December: Mon–Wed 11–10, Thu–Sat 11–midnight, Sun noon–9.
