Grampa's Pizzeria
Grampa's Pizzeria is located at 1374 Williamson St. It primarily serves extra-thin crust signature pizzas in a restaurant setting alongside small plates. The owner is Gilbert Altschul. Gilbert Altschul opened it in 2013 in the former Grampa's Gun Shop, before Gib's Bar and Bandit Tacos & Coffee[1].
History
Altschul, then kitchen manager at Mickey's Tavern and the stepson of its owner, Jane Capito, announced in April 2013 that he would turn Grampa's Gun Shop and the house beside it into a 45-seat late-night pizzeria, named for a pizza recipe his grandfather developed when he owned a bar in the 1960s[2][3]. It opened in July 2013 with hours to 2 a.m., 3 a.m. on weekends, and a six-seat beer and wine bar[4][5]. Within a week a dispute over a breastfeeding customer blew up on Facebook; Altschul apologized and gave mothers and children free pizza on July 25[5].
The reviews of its first autumn praised the Barberini ($14) and the Finnochio ($13), with sausage, fennel and Anaheim peppers; the basic pie was $9[5][4]. Altschul said he would like to open "six to eight" versions in cities such as Austin and San Diego[4]. The Barberini was one of the Capital Times' candidates for the area's best pizza in November 2013[6]. In December 2014 the team was turning the house next door into Gib's Cocktail Bar, meant as a "creative waiting room" for the restaurant[7].
Pizza
- Artisanal pizzas such as the Barberini (ricotta, garlic, Calabrian chiles, tomato sauce, watercress and honey) and the Puerco (tomato sauce, pork confit and gorgonzola dolcina)[8].
Trivia
- In February 2023 Yelp named Grampa's the most romantic restaurant in Wisconsin, and Seth Meyers joked about it on NBC's Late Night[8].
