George Backus
From Madison Pizza Wiki
George L. "Buck" Backus (died 1986) was the founder of Buck’s Pizza, which is named after him.
Backus came to Madison from Racine, where he had managed the Meadowbrook Country Club, and opened Buck's on Cottage Grove Road in 1960. He later added a second store on the West Side, in Midvale Plaza[1].
In March 1962 he was hired to manage concessions for the University of Wisconsin "W" Club, and he stayed for 22 years[1].
Trivia
- The recipes at Buck's are credited to him, and he is pictured in its logo, wearing an apron and a necktie[2].
- Many people assume that the name Buck's comes from Bill Buchholz, who owned the business from 1991 to 2010[1].
