Bob Sieger owned the building by April 2000, when he and Tom Brunner bought the Copper Grid tavern next door (later the Gridiron); Urban Pizza had a beer garden on game days; Robert Oldenburg applied for the license in spring 2003 (placed on file); the corporation became Urban Pizza Cafe, LLC in June 2004, and a church took space in the building that November.
A 2003 review praised the buttery 'Urban original crust' deep dish (a 12-inch feeds three or four; $8.95 cheese to $13.49 specialty, thin crust from $6.89, slices $2.50 at lunch and dinner) and noted a summer menu with lower prices, fewer appetizers and no soups or pasta.
Reviewed by Chris Martell in Dec. 1997 as 'another new contender for the best new pizza in Madison honors': 12-inch pizzas $8.75–12.75, 'spryte' size $3.95–5.95, pesto-based and create-your-own pizzas, Urban Bowl salad $4.95, Greek salad $3.75; pizzas came through a pick-up window in a 'New York industrial loft' room with acid-green walls; Mon–Thu 11–10, Fri–Sat 11–midnight, Sun 11–9.
