Chicago-based pizza chain Edwardo's arrived in Madison in 1988, opening a restaurant on the west side[1]. Edwardo's is perhaps best known for their stuffed pizza. Locations still exist in Chicago and some other areas, but no longer in Madison.
Trivia
- Participant in the "College Pizza Challenge" at The Langdon, in 1989.
- Liquor license applied for at 333 N Bassett St. address in 1989[2], but later opened in late 1992 at 454 W Johnson St[3][4], later closing in March 1997[5].
- In May 1990 the city licensed two Edwardo's: Edwardo's Natural Pizza Restaurant at 333 N. Bassett St., under Erl Mid-Con Ltd., and Edwardo's Natural Pizza at 6601 Mineral Point Rd., under Mineral Spirits Inc., both with Greg Galle as agent[6]. A year later only the Mineral Point Road license was renewed[7]. So the downtown restaurant was open at the Bassett Street address by 1990, two years before the 1992 opening at 454 W. Johnson St. noted above; whether the two addresses describe the same corner building has not been checked.
- The May 1995 license list gave the campus restaurant's address as 425 W. Johnson St., held by Madison Pizza Venture with Gregory J. Galle as agent, and the west side one under Mineral Spirits Inc.[8]; the same year's advertisements and guides said 454 W. Johnson[9][10], and the 1996 list went back to 454[11].
- The downtown restaurant stood at the corner of Bassett and Johnson streets: in 1999 Samara Kalk described Casa Bianca at 333 N. Bassett St. as "where Edwardo's used to be"[12].
- Declared "Best Deep-Dish Pizza" in Samara Kalk's roundup of good budget eateries in 1994[13].
- Held "Good Neighbor Nights" at the downtown location in 1995/1996 to benefit Habitat for Humanity[14].
- West side location donated to local Domestic Abuse Intervention Services during Domestic Violence Abuse Awareness month in 1998[15][16].
- The license for the west side restaurant was applied for in May 1987[17], and that October the chain, "now expanding to Madison", was advertising for managers[18].
- In May 1993 "Madison's full service pizza favorite" was looking for managers, with resumes to Kevin Niezgoda at the restaurant or to a Chicago-area telephone number[19]; it was listed in a dining guide that August[20].
- The west side restaurant was still advertising a $10.99 large thin or stuffed pizza in December 2001[21] and was licensed in May 2002[22]. It closed in September 2002: "the 2-inch high stuffed pizzas never took hold here," the Capital Times wrote, and the chain's office said a manager had quit and "things went kind of crazy on us"[23].
- The west side restaurant's equipment was sold at public auction in October 2003[24].
- Jim Meyer, co-founder of Pizza Extreme, had worked at Edwardo's[25].
