Scott Gittrich, a Domino's driver in 1984, opened the first Toppers in Champaign, Illinois, in 1991 and the second in Whitewater in 1993, moved the headquarters there, and began franchising in 2000, expanding into the Madison and Milwaukee markets; $20.3 million in sales in 2009, open until 3 or 4 a.m., Topperstix, little green army men with deliveries.
By January 2005 Toppers had two Madison stores (1368 Regent St., 7475 Mineral Point Rd.) and was delivering to the UW campus; the chain then had a dozen stores, 'around for almost 15 years', and launched a franchising drive.
toppers.com (Oct. 7, 2003): 'Topper's Pizza Inc. has grown to 10 stores in the last 10 years, with more than 240 employees'; with the iFranchise Group it planned two stores within six months — its first in Minnesota (St. Cloud) and 'the second within the city of Madison … expected to service the southwest side of the city'.
