'It was 1949 when Albert Schiro, an Italian immigrant of Albanian descent, hung Madison's first pizza sign over the entrance to his legendary Grotto bar on State Street' (CT 1985). Marv and Albert Schiro's restaurant of 31 years in January 1980, 'the pizza is rated highly'. Gone by June 1985, when The Flamingo had taken over the space.
Campbell (1979): Mary and Albert Schiro had served pizza and pasta in the basement at 636 State St. for 31 years; sauce and dough made from scratch; regulars came for the 'thin, crispy, almost buttery crust and rich tomato sauce'; nine-inch pizza $2.35 on Wednesdays.
Opened January 1949 in the former Busch's Tea Room, Busch Building: 'It's called Pizza Pie ... the new home of Pizza Pie'. A rival answered five days later: 'Yes we're still the home of Pizza Pie' (3 Sisters Dining Room, W. Washington Ave.).
