Iven Pizza (also known as Iven Greek Pizza), was a pizeria operating on Regent St. in the 1980s.
History
Iven Haddix opened the restaurant in January 1980 at the corner of Regent and Orchard streets[1]. The State Journal's fall dining guides described it each year. In 1984: "East Coast style pizzas, 'grinders' (toasted Italian sandwiches), baked spaghetti and greek salads are the specialties at Iven's. Comfortable seating with lots of greenery and soft music." It was open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily, with free delivery in the campus area; "All menu foods are served with white cheddar cheese. Homemade cookies are always available and homemade dough, meatballs and sauces make delicious pizzas"[2]. The 1985 guide called it "East Coast-style pizza, Italian 'grinders' and salads"[3], and the 1986 guide "Deep-dish pizza, Italian 'grinders,' baked spaghetti and lasagne ... Dine in, take-out, evening delivery"[4]. The guides printed the address as 1306 Regent St.
The restaurant was still open in June 1986, when a lost-and-found notice mentioned its parking lot[5], and in October 1986, when the dining guide listed it[4]. It was not in the fall 1987 guide[6].
Pizza
- Used cheddar instead of mozzarella, and lots of herbs and spices. Thick, raised crust[7].
- "Greek" pizza style apparently is/was popular in New England and the East Coast[8], but this particular variant is likely extinct in Madison. Iven Haddix had worked in East Lansing, Michigan pizza parlors where he'd been introduced to the style by an "East Coast Greek."
- Offered anchovies as a choice of topping.
Trivia
- Proprietor was Iven G. Haddix, according to class "B" liquor license application mention in the WSJ[9]. The license list of May 1, 1986 read "Haddix, Iven G., dba Iven Greek Pizza, 1306 Regent Street"[10].
- Business slow in Dec. 1983, owing to high competition[11].
Locations
- 1302 Regent St. at corner of Orchard St. & Regent St. (January 1980 to at least October 1986).
