912 E. Johnson St., on the near east side, has held one pizza place after another since 1981: Supreme Pizza for almost 30 years, then Madtown Pizza, then Salvatore's Tomato Pies, and since December 2024 Molten Monkey Pizza.

Timeline

  • January 1978: The Rising Sun, advertising for counter help[1].
  • By April 1981 to November 2010: Supreme Pizza[2][3]. Owned by David Wilson from 1984 until his death in September 2000[4]; closed for a few weeks after that and again for a month in 2001, between owners[5][6].
  • About June 2011 to late 2014: Madtown Pizza, opened by two couples, Joe and Kay Cerniglia and Frankie and Kelly Grant, who had bought Supreme Pizza in November 2010[3][7]. It was still there in August 2014[8].
  • December 4, 2014: Salvatore's Tomato Pies[9]. In 2020 it was carryout and delivery only, and it closed for the winter on January 3, 2021[10]. A later account says it closed in August 2021 and reopened for about nine months in 2022[11]; a May 2023 advertisement still listed it, with the telephone number (608) 238-6000[12].
  • December 13, 2024: Molten Monkey Pizza, Detroit-style, the first of the address's pizza places with a bar[13].

Trivia

  • East Johnson Street between Butler and Baldwin streets was rebuilt in 2014 for $10 million, with new water mains, bike lanes and sidewalk bump-outs for cafe seating — one of them in front of the coming Salvatore's[14].
  • The 1989 dining column that praised Supreme Pizza's vegetarian toppings gave the telephone number as 255-2500[15]; by 2009 it was 255-2200[16].
