Sugar River Pizza is a family pizza business that began in Belleville. Sarah and Ross Thomas started it with Sarah's parents, Deb and Daryl Watterson[1]. It was runner-up for the State Journal readers' People's Choice award for best pizza in 2024, 2025 and 2026[2][3][4].

History

The Capital Times says the business started in Belleville in 2010[1]; the State Journal said in 2023 that it began "14 years ago", about 2009[5]. A New Glarus store followed in 2013. The Verona store opened in March 2016 in a newly built building at 957 Liberty Dr., which became an anchor of Verona's Liberty Drive district near Fisher King Winery and Wisconsin Brewing[6]; the Belleville store closed later that year. A Sun Prairie store, owned by the Wattersons, was announced in March 2019 for the Prairie Lakes development, with 46 tap lines planned[7]; it opened on October 8, 2020, on Cabela Drive near Cabela's[8][1][5].

In 2023 the Thomases opened Stone Porch Alehouse in Verona, in the former Boulder Brewpub, with burgers and fried chicken rather than pizza[5][1].
